A&P Joins Forces with The Children's Health Fund

Announcement is made at gala celebration attended by Paul Simon and Jane Pauley at the company's Food Emporium Bridgemarket location in NYC

MONTVALE, NJ (November 30, 2006)-The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, Inc. (A&P) has announced a partnership with The Children's Health Fund (The CHF), based in New York City, to conduct fundraising activities at A&P and affiliated stores.

The joint announcement was made by A&P and The CHF at a gala celebration that heralded the company's grand re-opening of its Food Emporium Bridgemarket store at 1st Avenue and 59th Street in Manhattan. The Bridgemarket location is the first of 18 Food Emporium stores that will feature the company's new Fine Foods Concept unveiled earlier this month.

The CHF co-founders, composer/performer Paul Simon and Irwin Redlener, MD, were both in attendance at the event. Also headlining the gala celebration were broadcast television personality Jane Pauley, a longtime supporter of The CHF and current chair of its Advisory Board; and Christian Haub, Executive Chairman of A&P. Each spoke at the festivities, which also included a live auction fundraiser for a guitar personally autographed by Simon.

"It is my great pleasure to announce the partnership of The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company and The Children's Health Fund," said Haub. "Our organizations have come together to raise funds for the health and well-being of children in New York City and around the U.S." He added, "It is an honor to share this evening's festivities with The CHF co-founders - Dr. Irwin Redlener and a true New York City icon, Paul Simon. All of us at A&P look forward to a successful relationship on behalf of this outstanding cause."

Irwin Redlener, MD, president of The Children's Health Fund, said, "We are thrilled to establish this partnership with A&P and look forward to the company's support of our programs that provide vital health and nutritional services to some of the nation's most medically disadvantaged children. A&P's support in achieving the goal of raising $1 million for The CHF's work over the next three years will go a long way in helping us provide care for children in the years to come."

Among The CHF programs to benefit from revenue-generating events conducted throughout A&P's store network will be the "Starting Right" Nutrition Education and Support program. As part of this initiative, A&P hopes to coordinate efforts with leading suppliers to encourage and foster healthful childhood eating habits, while combating childhood obesity and related health issues.

Since its establishment by Redlener and Simon in 1987, The CHF has developed a multifaceted range of programs on behalf of needy children in many states across the nation, including literacy and other education programs; medical, dental and other health care services; social development efforts and other children's advocacy initiatives.
